As founder of Creative Discourse, and a Senior Associate with Everyday Democracy, Sue has spent her career working with municipalities, school districts, and grass roots community organizations to design and implement productive public conversations that lead to change.
Sue is a student of the ways racism, implicit bias, and whiteness impact our public institutions, and has a special interest in helping people build their awareness and capacity to apply an equity lens to their community change work. She co-authored Facing Racism in a Diverse Nation, an Everyday Democracy discussion guide being used around the country to help communities address race relations and racial equity.
For the past three years, Sue has been working with The Nellie Mae Education Foundation, Everyday Democracy, and Great Schools Partnership providing technical assistance to school districts around New England to build their capacity for effective community engagement.
Recently, Sue served as Community Liaison for Creating Community Solutions, part of the National Dialogue on Mental health and also co-coordinated the Heart & Soul of Essex, a two year citizen led initiative funded by the Orton Family Foundation to identify shared community values, foster collaboration among two linked municipalities and increase civic participation.
Sue also served as the Director of Leadership at the Snelling Center for Government, coordinating the Vermont Leadership Institute (VLI), and the Vermont School Leadership Project. While at the Snelling Center, Sue assisted with the design and implementation of several policy projects. She has been privileged to serve on the faculty of the Vermont Leadership Institute since 1999, and is a 2005 graduate of VLI.
She holds a bachelor's degree in English from Skidmore College, and recently had the opportunity to participate in Creating Collaborative Solutions at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. This intensive, week long seminar explored new methods of working across traditional jurisdictions and sectors to identify, understand, and address emerging social problems.
